It's true; I haven't had a functioning car for over 3 years now, which in Los Angeles is beyond ETERNITY. Biking in L.A can be intimidating and downright scary sometimes. But i love it! I love biking home from work and zooming past all the cars stuck in traffic. I'm fast, really fast, and I'm sure they don't particularly like a girl in work heels and a dress beating them to every stop light (mwahaha). I especially like when they rev up their engines, then have nowhere to go while all I do is change gears and, "see ya wouldn't wanna be ya!"
On Sunday, we had friends staying with us from San Diego and we all went to the final race of the Amgen Tour of California. Knowing nothing about cycling our friends were very impressed with the whole spectacle. At one point, we girls were at the guard rail and Stephanie turned to Vince standing a bit behind her and said, “Babe, I would stand over there with you but it’s far more exciting over here.” And this from someone who doesn’t even keep-up with the sport!
I loved the fact that bike enthusiasts of all sorts were there with their bikes wearing everything from very legit cycling kits to chic bike friendly skirts, tops and bike inspired jewelry. I saw some awesome screen printed bike inspired tees and all kinds of cool outfits that would be perfect for my bike to work commute!
This past weekend was so incredible special and inspiring to me. The bike loving community was out in force! A lot of people here in the U.S. don't take professional cycling very seriously. But those that take the time to learn a little something about these riders will learn that they are WARRIORS! Don't let their slim physique fool you! They are strong and brave endurance athletes that put their lives on the line, and fiercely protect and support their teammates all the way to victory.
Even after riding over 700 miles in 8 days at average speeds of 40 miles their generosity with their fans is unlike anything I've ever seen. After each race they took time to meet with their supporters. I was equally inspired by their superior athleticism and human kindness alike.
But seriously, when you’re standing at a guard rail and these guys zip past it’s pretty intense! What a human being can accomplish on a bike is amazing. My enthusiasm for biking, bike riders, bike commuters, bike style – basically everything bike related – reached an all- time high this weekend So give biking a try; give pro cycling a try , and you might just be surprised you LOVE it!
